Introduction
In English, sentences can be active or passive. The passive voice is used when the action is more important than who performs it, or when the doer is unknown.
Active vs Passive
- Active: The chef cooks the meal. (focus on the chef)
- Passive: The meal is cooked by the chef. (focus on the meal)
Forming the Passive
The passive is formed with: be + past participle
Passive in All Tenses

When to Use Passive Voice
1. When the doer is unknown or unimportant
- My wallet was stolen yesterday. (I don't know who)
- English is spoken in many countries. (the speakers don't matter)
2. In formal and academic writing
- The experiment was conducted in 2023.
- The results were analyzed using statistical methods.
3. In news reports
- The president was elected with 60% of the vote.
- Three people were injured in the accident.
4. In processes and descriptions
- The coffee beans are harvested, roasted, and packaged.
Common Mistakes

Get-Passive (Informal)
In informal English, "get" can replace "be" in passive constructions:
