Articles: A, An, The, and Zero Article

Complete guide to using English articles correctly with rules, exceptions, and practice exercises.

Introduction

Articles (a, an, the) are small words that cause big problems for English learners. This lesson covers all the rules for using articles correctly.

Indefinite Articles: A / An

Use a or an with singular, countable nouns when you are talking about something non-specific or mentioned for the first time.

A vs An

  • Use a before consonant sounds: a book, a university, a one-time offer
  • Use an before vowel sounds: an apple, an hour, an MBA degree

:::warning

It's about the sound, not the letter! "A university" (starts with /ju:/ sound) but "an umbrella" (starts with /ʌ/ sound).
