Introduction
Articles (a, an, the) are small words that cause big problems for English learners. This lesson covers all the rules for using articles correctly.
Indefinite Articles: A / An
Use a or an with singular, countable nouns when you are talking about something non-specific or mentioned for the first time.
A vs An
- Use a before consonant sounds: a book, a university, a one-time offer
- Use an before vowel sounds: an apple, an hour, an MBA degree
:::warning
It's about the sound, not the letter! "A university" (starts with /ju:/ sound) but "an umbrella" (starts with /ʌ/ sound).
